Advances in Understanding the Pathogenesis of Scleroderma, Robert Lafyatis, MD              Scleroderma Research Forum, November 21, 2010

Dr. Robert Lafyatis is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine with residencies at North
Carolina Baptist Hospital, Bowman and the National Institutes of Health with fellowships at
the National Institutes of Health. He presently is a professor of medicine with major clinical
interests in systemic sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Lafyatis
carries out patient oriented research into the cause and treatment of systemic sclerosis. This includes early phase
clinical trials into new therapeutic agents in patients with systemic sclerosis. He is investigating the mechanisms
of actions and markers of response for novel therapeutics. He is leading an effort in the study of biomarkers in
systemic sclerosis. The goals of these studies are to find molecular markers for disease activity and progression that
improve treatment and permit smaller, faster clinical trials. Ongoing studies include investigation into molecular
markers of pulmonary hypertension in systemic sclerosis.
