About Dr. Shapiro:
Dr. Lee Shapiro is a graduate of Yale College and the College of Physicians and Surgeons (Columbia University). He completed his fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Pittsburgh. While there, he developed a deep and abiding interest in scleroderma under the mentorship of three pioneers in the field; Drs. Gerald Rodnan, Thomas Medsger, and
Virginia Steen.

He is professor of medicine and director of the scleroderma center at Albany Medical College. He also serves as chief medical officer of the Steffens Scleroderma Foundation, which he founded, and has been on the medical advisory board of the Scleroderma Foundation TriState for 30 years.

He has developed collaborative research projects with investigators at several local institutions and with multiple scleroderma centers across the country and abroad. His areas of interest include micro vascular disease in scleroderma and Degos Disease, and both patient and health professional education.

He is the recipient of the Distinguished Physician Lifetime Achievement Award (2008) and Doctor of the Year Award (2016) from the Scleroderma Foundation.
